NAFL London Silverbacks add New Junior Cheerleading Team!

The NAFL London Silverbacks, along with Expressions Dance Arts Inc., are hosting a Junior Cheerleader opportunity this summer for all children and youth from St. Thomas, London and surrounding areas. Dancers, gymnasts and cheerleaders ages 6-18 are invited to be part of the Junior Silverbacks Cheerleaders. This exciting team is a chance for young people to be part of a real football club, to cheer at games, and to participate in community events.

The Senior cheerleaders last season were mainly from the London area, but some came from as far away as Toronto and Hamilton. Many of Expressions Dance Arts’ current students are members of the team. “We enjoy the chance to share our skills with the crowd”, says Caitlyn Vader, now a 1-year veteran of the team. “Our routines are energetic. It is fun to perform outside for lots of fans.”

Silverbacks Cheer Director Elizabeth Morgan focuses on training children and young adults for the pro leagues. “I have former students who now dance in the NFL, CFL and AFL”, she says. As a former NFL Bills, CFL Argos and Ticats Line Captain, and a Choreographer for the CFL Argos, Elizabeth is a fan of promoting the sport of cheerleading in Canada. “We often get overshadowed by the U.S. but we have tons of talent and lots of opportunities here.” This is one of the main reasons the Silverbacks and Expressions set up this opportunity for young people. “We want to continue to develop children’s knowledge of fitness, teamwork, performance and Canadian sport. We also want a place where parents and their kids can enjoy a sporting event together right here at home.”

A related honour came this spring when Miss Morgan was named as Canadian Liaison for the NFL Buffalo Bills Cheerleaders. She will be helping coordinate some efforts for the Bills Cheerleaders when the team plays in Toronto this season. “It was an easy task to take on. I am very familiar with the Rogers Centre having cheered and choreographed there for years. The Jills are my second family, so this was a special role I was happy to accept. “

Members of the NAFL Silverbacks Cheerleaders will get lots of chances to dance and be part of football activity this season. The Juniors will practice once every other week and then perform at 3-5 home games. If the team makes the playoffs, the children and youth will perform then too. Last year the Silverbacks won the NAFL Division 2 Championship in Las Vegas, so they have huge hopes of making it that far again this season.

The family friendly atmosphere and great venue, TD Waterhouse Stadium at UWO, make this a fun way for young performers to spend their summer. Newcomers to the Junior and Senior team are accepted by audition. Boys and girls are welcome.
